Last week Greyleys Big Show Peach (in her 9th lactation) welcomed Great-great granddaughter Greyleys Channing Pawpaw into the Greyleys herd. Pawpaw's Mother, Greyleys Dimension Pomegranate (1st lactation) Grandmother, Greyleys Link Pineapple (3rd lactation) and Great Grandmother Greyleys Lix Pear (5th lactation) are all still in the Greyleys herd.

The 'fruits beginning with a P' family are an unassuming camera shy family, who just get on with it. Together Peach, Pear and Pineapple have produced 86,000 litres of milk and 9,000 litres of milk solids.

🌾Straw🌾

At the moment we are busy gathering straw from our neighbouring farms to use later in the winter.

Straw is the stalks left over mostly from the wheat and barley harvest and it has several uses here.

Firstly, straw makes a very comfortable bed for the cows when they sleep inside the sheds in wintertime.

It also is a tasty addition to their diet providing an important source of fibre.

Once dirty, the straw is heaped and then ploughed back into the land providing natural fertiliser and improving soil structure.

All our straw is bought from and returned to the land within 3 miles of our farm keeping everything as local as possible.
